14. Super-Hot-Scott

“Scott?”

I blinked at him in delight as he unscrewed the plastic cap and handed me the water.

“Where’s Jenny? How was your date?” I was already peering over his shoulder for my best friend, convinced she must be with him. Though why they had decided to go clubbing after dinner was beyond me. But that didn’t matter. The important thing was that they were here, and Jenny would be more than happy to lend me the money to get a cab home without any awkwardness.

“She’s not here.” Scott gave a lift of one shoulder in a rueful shrug.

“What? Why? What happened?” My face fell as I realised that it wasn’t good for Jenny, or me for that matter. If their date had ended already, and Scott had decided to go to a nightclub without her, then the evening must have been a disaster.

Scott looked embarrassed, which was kind of adorable, except I didn’t feel particularly well-disposed toward him if he had hurt my friend.

“She... Well, I think she realised it wasn’t me she actually wanted.”

I frowned. What on earth was he talking about? Jenny had been obsessed by nothing but Scott for months. Of course, she wanted him! She thought he was God’s gift. Who else could she possibly...?

I slapped my forehead with my palm as the obvious answer hit me.

“Nick,” I groaned with annoyance, “She’s been bamboozled by Nick Weathergale. She’s such an idiot!”

Scott laughed. “Something like that, yeah.”

“Oh crap, I knew it. I told her to keep away from him. What is it with him? I just don’t get it. And why does he do it? For the thrill? Poor Jenny.”

“Poor me,” Scott said, still grinning. “Because I think he’s totally crazy about her, too.”

“You do?” I asked, suspiciously.

“Definitely.” He nodded. “I’ve never seen him in such a state over a girl.”

“Really?” My heart lightened, and I considered ringing Jenny straight away for all the details. But it was late and we’d talk in the morning anyway.

The barman handed Scott a drink, and he picked it up. “Shall we sit?” he gestured to a table by the wall.

I practically floated to it.

It wasn’t that I was into Scott (though obviously I'd have been on him like a rash if I could, and if Jenny hadn’t already staked a claim), but it was just amazing to be sitting down with the most gorgeous boy in the entire club and be seen talking to him. Plus, he was so nice.

I sipped at my bottled water and gradually began to feel much better. I hadn’t really had all that much to drink, but I wasn’t used to it, and I'd certainly never drunk neat shots before. I think I'd been more high on the atmosphere and the camaraderie until both had come crashing down. Cueing the low that followed any high.

But now, I was happy again. I was the sole focus of attention of the wonderfully desirable Scott Lawes, and boy did that feel great.

I listened to Scott give me a complete rundown of the Jenny situation.
